Chapter 26 C’mere, Girl

It was the second time Tricia had ridden in Matt’s car. The last time the air was thick with tension. Just like now. But this tension was different. She was nervous, and Matt wasn’t helping by remaining so quiet as he drove back into Acerton.

“Where are we going?” she finally said.

“Back to church.”

“Why?”

“That's where Mrs. Levitt is now.” He kept watching the road and that stupid smirk appeared.

“Why would she still be at church? How do you know that?”

He smiled now. “You forget how 'connected' I am. The church opens the hall after service and people serve lunch for the homeless or anyone else who feels like coming. Dot will be there. she runs the kitchen." He looked over at her and grinned. "Don’t anticipate, Tricia, participate.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” She wanted to bristle. She wanted to get peeved… but she didn’t have anything.

“Take it easy. We’re almost there and…” he turned to her with a cheese grin. “All will be revealed,” came out in a pretty bad Darth Vader voice.

With a sigh she settled back into her seat to watch the road. She hadn’t even gotten into Rob Stowes’ back yard to say hello before taking off on this trek. Oh well, she’d call or text Janet later. She felt her purse. There was a bit of a surprise in it for Mr. Doyle too, she realized. Now it was her turn to smile privately.

Before she knew it, they were walking up towards the front entrance. Just as she was about to go in the front door, Matt tugged her hand.

“Not yet. Things don't get started for another half hour or so. Around back.” He held her hand for a few extra seconds and she didn’t mind. When he let go… she sorta minded that.

There was a doorway with a sign over it that read ‘Church Hall’ that led into a one story addition tacked to the rear of the church proper. They entered.

The hall was a hive of activity. There were about six people in the room, working at a rapid clip. Pastor Reese and another man were unfolding what appeared to be the last of a group of eight foot tables. Behind them were a man and woman unfolding chairs and lining them up. A third duo was behind them, covering the tops with tablecloths. Doing a quick calculation in her head, Tricia was watching a party for sixty guests being set up with almost military precision.

“They do this a lot?” she asked Matt.

“Yeah… they got it down pretty good. That’s the social committee.” He looked at her. “It's our chance to reach out and help some poor families and people who've got a hard go of it.” He held her gaze.

“About time you’re here!” They both looked over to see Pastor Reese walking towards them. He dropped his head as he approached, looking from Matt to Tricia over his glasses. With a smile, he said “Welcome Tricia!” Turning to Matt, he said “They’re a little short handed in the kitchen, Matt.
